Japanese Merchant's Ledger Tansu Chest
Merchant’s ledger tansu chest from Japan during the Taisho era from 1912-1926. Made from “Sogiri” Kiri wood with iron hardware, this two section tansu chest was traditionally used by merchants for document storage. Tansu is the term given to the antique cabinetry of Japan that was popularized between 1860 and 1910 to provide portable storage for small spaces. A combination of utility and beauty, each piece carries a unique history.
